Surf & Piers
Rich Kuhns at the Flagler Pier said whiting, blues, pompano, small sharks and drum have been caught. He said the bite is best early or late in the day, and added that "a kid by the name of Richey" caught a 38-pound, 54-inch kingfish Monday.
Offshore
Ralph Deshon at the Fishin' Shack said he has heard of some blackfin tuna caught and he said kings are starting to pick up. He heard about a 60-pounder caught by the bell buoy. Schools of pogies and big jacks have been in that general area lately, he said.
Todd Wynn at the Fishin' Hole said dolphinfish action ought to hold strong for a bit longer. The word in the Keys is the big ones just moved out, so there are still some bulls headed our way, Wynn said.
Wynn said a few cobia are still being caught under weed patches out in 130 feet of water.
Ponce Inlet area
Deshon said jetty anglers have had it slow, with a few black drum, a few pompano and a couple of redfish. He said the bite has generally been better closer to Sun Glow Pier than at the jetty.
Mosquito Lagoon & Indian River Lagoon
Al Huffman at Lagoon Bait & Tackle said although water temperatures are climbing, redfish schools haven't broken up yet.
Small pinfish, shrimp and cut mullet have been the most productive baits for trout and reds, he said.
Huffman said the Clinkers has been a hot spot for trout, and Bird Island, George's Bar and Gaines' Slough have been good bets for reds.
Halifax River
"Finger mullet are finally starting to move through the river," Wynn said. "It's not any thing big, but the way it's been is no bait at all, so any bait is better than none."
At the oyster bars around the bridges, reds are picking up and trout at night are picking up, Wynn said.
"Some pretty nice snook are starting to show up, too," he said.
Tomoka Basin
Capt. Paul Messick said he found a few tarpon up the Tomoka River past U.S.1 and even a few snook willing to eat. He was fly fishing and throwing an Enrique Puglisi baitfish imitator.
"We also caught a bass on fly before the U.S.1 bridge. I've been catching more bass than ever lately," he said.
Capt. Jerry Messick guided Lori Bailey and Gene Fisher from Port Orange for Fisher's birthday. They caught a bunch of jacks, snook, four reds on gold spoons tipped with paddle tails and some black drum.
Paul Messick said as afternoon rains increase, he'll begin targeting docks at night.
Matanzas Inlet area
Karen Miles at the Devil's Elbow Fish Camp said she heard there's a bunch of tarpon around the inlet. In the backwaters, she said small flounder are picking up and reds and trout haven't been as good on the flats as at the edges of the channel where the water is cooler.
St. Johns River
Kim Boisen at Bull Creek Fish Camp on Dead Lake said the bream bite is really good on crickets. She's seeing catches of up to 34 fish.
On bass, she said the local old timers are fishing popper top-waters early and then fishing worms deep later in the day. A good bass day lately is seven fish up to six pounds, she said.
