Default When mandatory sentencing goes wrong.....

    Read the article below PLEASE:
here is a 23 year old, now sentenced to life in prison for breaking into a garage, then going into a house and stealing $10.00 and 2 guns, and the sentence is mandatory be cause the jury found him guilty.

Now I'm not a society cheerleader ( at least I don't think I am) but to me this reeks.
I cannot see where a logical person would think this person deserves to spend the next what 60 years in jail for this?
I know he has a problem and likely if released would offend again, because we don't teach anything else while we have them in custody. This stuff really aggravates me. In life we use punishment as a means of correction or "Education".
Yet in "Education" we cannot use punishment as a tool? Does anyone else see something wrong here?
The last number I heard for inmate costs were in the neighborhood of $55,000.00 per year. Society and the victims of crimes get nothing. Should we not start a college program in our prisons with transitions to halfway homes or something and then get those prisoners out into the workforce and make them repay their housing and education costs? If we are going to throw people away ( I think thats what we have done here) then why not just do Society and them a favor and get this done and over with?
Let me know what you think!

DeLand burglar sentenced to life in prison
    February 26, 2012 12:05 AMPosted in:

    Antonio Browning
A DeLand burglar has been sentenced to life in prison for crimes he committed shortly after leaving prison on other burglary and theft convictions.
Antonio C. Browning, 23, was convicted of several more charges Thursday and Friday, and received a mandatory life sentence because he is a prison-release reoffender, a State Attorney's Office spokeswoman said Saturday.
Browning's convictions Thursday were armed burglary, grand theft firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. On Friday, a jury also found him guilty on a separate burglary charge.
Prosecutors' spokeswoman Klare Ly said Browning broke into a DeLand home while a woman was out running errands and her ill husband slept in his recliner. A neighbor saw him climb through a garage window, though, and called 9-1-1. Deputies surrounded the house, and Browning surrendered.
He also left his fingerprints on the window, prosecutors said. He had stolen two firearms and ten dollars in cash. The crime occurred in October 2010, less than three months after Browning was released from prison

That is Insane, while I am not sympathetic to thieves at all this is really unjustifiable and a great expense to all of us.
