BURGLAR SURPRISED BY 11-YEAR-OLD, CAUGHT BY DEPUTIES

A pair of burglary suspects who struck the DeLand area Monday morning wound up in handcuffs after one of them surprised an 11-year-old girl who was home alone at the time of the break-in.

Shortly after the burglary around 10:30 a.m. on Abel Avenue, both 20-year-old Xavier Bahena and 22-year-old Kelvin Kelly were in custody – thanks in large part to that 11-year-old and her neighbors, who helped sheriff’s deputies track them down.

The girl was alone in the house Monday when deputies believe Bahena entered through a window. She yelled, and the suspect ran away. The youngster grabbed a knife for protection until help arrived.

The suspects’ getaway was ruined by neighbors who spotted them climbing into a vehicle. Deputies soon found that vehicle, stopped it and arrested both men. Kelly made a second getaway attempt on foot, and briefly hid from a DeLand police officer by jumping into some nearby hedges. When he took off running again, a deputy caught him.

The 11-year-old was not injured. Deputies recovered several stolen items, including jewelry, and are continuing to investigate. Bahena is facing charges of burglary to an occupied dwelling and possession of a controlled substance. Kelly is facing charges of principal to burglary, fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement, driving with a suspended license and failure to appear on a charge of possession of marijuana. Kelly also faces an additional charge from DeLand police: resisting a law enforcement officer without violence. Additional charges are possible.
