Default Key Lime Tree in Palm Coast?

We're looking forward to relocating to Palm Coast.... The good news is that the closing is two weeks from today.... YAY . The bad news is that we're expecting up to a foot of snow tonight through tomorrow !

We'd love to have a couple of citrus trees. I believe a Meyer Lemon would grow okay, but am wondering about having a Key Lime. Palm Coast seems to be on the border of USDA Zones 9a and 9b. Does anybody here have a Key Lime, and if so, how has it done in the Palm Coast climate?

    Thanks for any info....

Thanks, Kathy! We're excited. It will be like camping out for a while, since we will have to furnish the place from the ground up. We will still have our home here in Maine for the hot summer months, so we won't be moving any furniture down to FL with us. Besides, it's not the right style for our home in Palm Coast.

With the exception of a year I spent in AZ, I've always lived in cold climates. It's going to be a welcome change not to have to contend with snow/ice/sleet/freezing rain.

Until a hurricane wiped the crop out Key Limes were grown in Key West. Now they are grown in Mexico. This part of Florida is too cold.

You need to be in the sub-tropics. Generally Miami or south.

I have a porch lime that produces limes year round. It is in a pot. We have had it for about 5 years and cover it when the temperatures go below 35 or so. It is blooming now. I also have a Lemon tree in a pot that I just took 10 lemons off of and it also is in full bloom. Both of these plants were purchased at Home Depot in Palm Coast.

Thanks for that information. If we're careful to cover it on cold nights, it looks like we could make it work. We have a small screen room on the back of the house. We could have a couple of dwarf trees there, but they'd only get sun for about half the day. It's worth a try.... thanks again

I lived near Newport in Maine. Loved it there. Cold never bothered me. Went out and played in the snow with the kids all the time.

I checked and it is a Persian Lime. I guess it has grown less than 2 feet in 5 years. My house faces North South and the lime tree is on the south side under the overhang of the porch so it only gets direct sun in the winter.

I don't mind the cold as much as I do the ice. Here on the coast we're apt to get sleet and freezing rain when just a bit inland they're getting snow. Makes it hazardous to even go out for a walk. I've always said that you can layer on clothes until you're warm when it's cold, and it's invigorating to go out and take a walk on a cold, crisp day, when the snow is crunching under your feet. But when there's a layer of ice over everything, it's best to stay inside by the wood stove. We'll be splitting our time between FL and ME, so we'll have the best of both worlds.

The back screened lanai of our house, as far as I can recall, faces southwest. It should get its share of sun.... especially since part of the room is all screened.... walls and roof both. If the trees are dwarf, we could move them through the sliders into the house when the weather is cold enough to harm them. Sounds like a plan

Sorry for the delay in getting on here, but Kotch has the answer, a Persian Lime in a pot works. Un glazed Clay pot 20 to 30 inch rim. keep it pruned to a manageable size and report every 5 years or so.
Key lime is just too sensitive to the cold.
If you are on the east side of 95 you shouldn't have a lot to worry about. I would also suggest getting some of the older style incandescent Christmas lights and put them on the inner branches and plug in during cold
