Default Question for our Resident Electrician

How do light bulbs become "loose" once they are screwed into the socket? I have those pot lights in my ceiling, in fact I have about 23 of them in my house. Once in a while it will appear that one has burned out and when #2 grandboy brings the ladder in from the garage and climbs up on it to replace the bulb, as soon as he touches it, it comes on and he can tighten it a tiny bit and it works without being replaced.

This is just one of those "why questions" that puzzle me.

Maybe some kind of vibration causes it. Happens here once in a while too.

Not so much due to looseness but due to temperature as high-hat type fixtures produce heat from the flood/spot light type bulbs. The metal tab in the socket is spring loaded but can be affected by temperature variations making it loose contact with the bulb.

As Jeannie mentioned there can also be some fibration from either ceiling fans or your a/c system. This combined with the spring tension on the center contact in the socket can make the bulb unscrew itself ever so slightly and gradually causing it to lose of power.
