    Default Bacon!

When in the heck did bacon get so expensive? I haven't purchased a package of bacon in probably 40-45 years; but, wanted a package (Oscar Meyer center cut) to make green bean bundles and it is about $7 for a 12-oz package.

My grandboys love the bundles and my DIL makes them using canned whole green beans. I want to make some testing/using frozen whole green beans and the Splenda brown sugar blend to test and see if the frozen green beans wouldn't be better. They have to bake in the oven for 45 minutes and the green beans get really mushy IMO and I am thinking that the frozen ones would be a better texture. Many of the recipes call for canned green beans; but, I am thinking frozen or fresh would be better. Anyway, the price of bacon just shocked me...

Trying to see if'n I can't improve on taking healthy green beans and wrapping them in bacon and pouring a mixture of melted butter and brown sugar over them just a bit.

Look for BOGO if you have freezer room.
Does it have to be OM? Since you are coating it, maybe a store brand?

I like the OM center cut because it is leaner; but, yes I did see that the store brands were less expensive.

strange you say this.... I was looking at the Center Cut packages the other day (as that is what I normally prefer) and comparing it to the store brand regular cut, the store brand looked leaner to me... I bought 2 on BOGO and saved a few bucks.

That's great! Wasn't as fortunate here. What store was that? Here in the city where I live the only big grocers are Kroger and Walmart (both Supercenter and a Marketplace). Rarely are there BOGO; but, Kroger often has very good sales and I do shop them...but, I wanted the bacon now! and there was no sale currently on the bacon I wanted. For more variety in grocers I would have to travel to North Little Rock/Little Rock which are 30+ miles away and that would not be worth it to me. I'fn I was 20 years younger with better knees, I'd make a monthly or every 6-weeks trek to the commissary at the Jacksonville AFB; but alas, that would be too difficult for me at this stage. We did get a Sam's Club here earlier this year but I probably wouldn't use 3 pounds of bacon during the rest of my life.

    Publix here in Palm Coast

I really don't use bacon much but keep it handy in the freezer for when I make an egg sandwich or a bacon-burger.

Since I don't use it daily, 2 lbs would go bad before I used it but what I do is cut the full length package in half and then individually wrap 2 strips (4 shorter pieces) in a piece of wax paper and load them all in a zip-lock bag for freezing. I can then just pull out a single portion of 2 strips or whatever I need and it quickly defrost to cook.

    What a great idea!
