    Default roundabout in palm coast

"When we speak and say we don’t want round a bouts and our elected representatives let DOT do what they want instead of working for us then this is an indication that we need to not elect any incumbent and vote in new leadership. This is our tax dollars and our county and our representatives have an obligation and responsibility to work for us! DOT needs to understand this is OUR county and we have a say so and when we speak we expect respect and representation. NO ROUND A BOUTS IN FLAGLER COUNTY!!!! They are confusing and create more problems then not. Is this a sneaky move to later put in check points? Florida has more round a bouts than any other state in the nation. There are no problems here in Flagler County that guard rails and lights can’t fix. McLaughlin, Ericksen, O’Brien, Hansen and Sullivan we expect you to stop this and listen to us the people"

This was posted by "Anonymous" as a reaction to a FlaglerLive.com article 8/10/2018.

I agree with the poster. Can't verify yet if the poster was accurate with his/her numbers regarding to how many roundabouts are in Florida. I DO agree that OUR reps in Palm Coast need to listen to us!

Counterpoint from the Washington Post, circa 2016 ( https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...=.70b567cbc972 )

    quote...
France is ahead of the curve.

The country is among the world's leaders in circular intersections, or roundabouts. Every 45th intersection in France is a roundabout, whereas the United States lags far behind with one per 1,118 intersections.

That's a real problem because researchers say roundabouts can save lives. According to data by the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, "roundabouts reduced injury crashes by 75 percent at intersections where stop signs or signals were previously used for traffic control." Apart from preventing cars from crashing into each other, roundabouts also saved the lives of countless pedestrians.
Why is that? The Washington State Department of Transportation points to several main reasons. First, curved intersections "eliminate" the possibility of deadly head-on collisions.

Second, the nature of roundabouts forces drivers to reduce their speeds as they approach them. And third, "because traffic is constantly flowing through the intersection, drivers don't have the incentive to speed up to try and 'beat the light,' like they might at traditional intersection," the Washington State Department of Transportation writes on its website.

Despite all that, the United States is vastly outperformed in the number of circular intersections compared with many European nations. Britain, for instance, has about 10 times as many roundabouts relative to the number of total intersections, according to an analysis by geospatial designer Damien Saunder that is based on data from 2014.

"I came across the idea because I'm an Australian living in (southern California) and after moving to the U.S. I rarely had to navigate any roundabouts," Saunder said in an email. "In Australia we have roundabouts everywhere."

What keeps Americans on a straight course regarding street intersections is most likely culture and experience. As Zachary Crockett, a writer at the data analyzing company Priceonomics, explains, "the roughly 3,700 circular traffic intersections in the U.S. are feared, avoided, and even loathed, often without good reason."

"It seems that every time traffic engineers propose to build a new one, there is protest and uproar," Crockett writes.
Saunder noticed that the extent to which Americans dislike roundabouts also strongly depends on the region. "We are definitely seeing the U.S. adopt more roundabouts in areas of new development on the outskirts of larger cites like Phoenix, for example."
But even in roundabout-friendly states, the number just doesn't compare to many other nations.

In Britain, fans of the circular intersections have even founded an association called the U.K. Roundabout Appreciation Society. With a good dose of British humor, the group celebrates a variety of aspects — including the beauty of the intersections.

"Roads are often condemned as being scars on the landscape, but with the coming of the roundabout in all their glory, they counteract the road’s unsightliness," the association's members say on their website. "With infinite variety, colour and creative-ness, these bitumen babes lift our sagging spirits on long tiresome trips."

It's a love that has yet to arrive in the United States.

In the past 7 years since I moved to central Arkansas, there have been a total six traffic circles installed on two different streets that I frequent and they have improved the flow of traffic immensely. There are no longer long lines of vehicles backed up waiting for the light to change or at 4-way stops. I like them.

My thought has been on a cost deal. A working fully function set of lights would be cheaper. They have a bunch of traffic circles in MA and in heavy traffic areas can be a real bear. To the point that one at the entrance to Cape Cod was removed. Thinking for a bit, Boston has one with traffic lights, talk about a mess. The location of this one shouldn't be any big deal, as it wouldn't have enough traffic to impede emergency equipment, just costly. imo

Well, that's the problem with democracy and the fix is the republic, were the mob is overruled by wisdom of the elected. I have made myself clear on roundabouts before , they are the best means to control intersections. Fear and uncertainty of how to use them is intimidating but that is not a reason to avoid installing them on new construction. I have driven in France, Spain Greece and Italy and had no problems and found them quite easy after I got past the intimidation factor I believe American drivers will adjust., It should be a part of the driving test, as well as changing a flat tire and while we are at it teach people that emergency flashers are not to be used while moving. and don't get me started on right on red from an inside lane on a red arrow light errrrghh.

People using the road make mistakes (like running stop signs and red lights), always have and always will. Crashes will always be with us, but they need not result in fatalities or serious injury.

Modern roundabouts are the safest form of intersection in the world - the intersection type with the lowest risk of fatal or serious injury crashes - (much more so than comparable signals). Modern roundabouts require a change in speed and alter the geometry of one of the most dangerous parts of the system - intersections.

The reduction in speed to about 20 mph and sideswipe geometry mean that, when a crash does happen at a modern roundabout, you usually need a tow truck, not an ambulance. Visit the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for modern roundabout FAQs and safety facts.

Roundabouts are one of several proven road safety features (FHWA).
The life saved may be your own.
    https://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/provenco...s/roundabouts/
    https://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/intersec...e/roundabouts/

Modern, slow and go, roundabout intersections have less daily delay than a stop light or stop sign, especially the other 20 hours a day people aren’t driving to or from work (it’s the #2 reason they’re built). Signals take an hour of demand and restrict it to a half hour, at best only half the traffic gets to go at any one time. 'At best' because traffic signals must have the yellow and all red portion (6+ seconds per cycle) for safety, and modern roundabouts do not. At a modern roundabout, drivers entering from different directions can all enter at the same time. Don’t try that with a signalized intersection.

The only gripe I have is seeing them installed on highways where traffic can be a bear sometimes with tractor trailers, motorcycle groups thinking they can fit 7 wide in a lane. Can you imagine how they will take that circle? Then you'll have 'drifters' seeing how many times they can go around without losing control before their buddy gives it a try. And France and the USA is like Apples and oranges. What's good for them and their style of driving and speeds don't mean it will work here. Fully operating street lights work for those paying attention and have you seen the videos of those not paying attention and drive straight through a round-a-bout?? NOT ON OUR HIGHWAYS! Not in places where the speed limit is 60 - 65 mph!! And the government is learning that they can steam roll the public and get away with it because they've become a 'public of pussies' that have no idea that they can control the government in it's decisions anymore! The government loves that they have trained the public and manicured them into a bunch of dumb fools who don't know how to get up an object anymore. It's quite sad. There are endless videos on Round-A-Bout accidents but here's a few. WTF were you thinking people????? WTF were you thinking Government morons????????

Nothing is 100% foolproof when it involves a determined fool! Stupid will do stupid...like the fool who hit the island in the traffic circle, he'd also probably drive right through a red light or stop sign and drift over into the other lane and hit an oncoming car head on...

People need to educate themselves on how to drive in one. I freaked when I ended up in one for the first time, I had never seen one before. I now know the proper way to drive in one and have done ok so far. Of course I could still get in an accident with some one who is clueless or talking on their phone.

Conway is a city of approximately 66,000 population. They currently have 24 active roundabout, at least 2 under construction that I know about and others planned. There has never been a fatality at a roundabout.
